How to Set Up Claude to Respond to Your Instagram DMs Automatically

March 18, 2026 · 3 min read

Most leads that come through Instagram DMs do not convert because the message sat there for hours before anyone saw it. The person who messaged you moved on. They found someone else, lost momentum, or simply forgot why they reached out.

The window for a first response is short. The operators and coaches who close from Instagram are the ones who respond first, not the ones who respond best.

I built a system that handles the first response automatically. Not a chatbot that runs a decision tree. A Claude-powered responder that reads the actual DM, understands what the person is asking, and replies in my voice within seconds.

It qualifies leads. It asks the right questions. It moves people toward a booking link. I show up to the call.

What this system actually does

It is not a bot. A bot runs a decision tree: if they say X, reply with Y. This reads the actual message, generates a response that fits the specific conversation, and asks the right follow-up question. It sounds like a person because it is reasoning like one.

The whole thing runs on two tools and costs under $20 a month to operate. The setup takes about 30 minutes once you know what you are doing.

The reasoning layer is Claude, connected through the API. Anthropic publishes official documentation if you want to see how the connection works before you build. And if you’re wondering where a build like this fits in the bigger picture, I wrote about how AI is changing business operations for owners thinking past one channel.

Who this is for

Coaches and consultants who get inbound DMs but lose them in the response gap. Operators and service providers whose Instagram generates warm leads that go cold.

If you have ever opened Instagram to find a message from someone who was clearly interested, sent an hour or two ago, and they are already gone, this is for you.

The prompt is the most important part

The integration is the pipe. The prompt is what flows through it. A prompt built around your specific voice, your specific offer, and your specific qualifying questions produces responses your actual clients would believe came from you.

Writing that prompt is the same exercise I run with coaching clients when we document how they sell. Get the voice, the offer, and the qualifying questions out of your head and onto paper. It’s step one of The Build Framework applied to a single channel.

Getting the prompt right is where most people spend the most time. I put together the exact prompt I use along with the full step by step setup in a guide I am sharing for free.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to know how to code to set this up?

No. The flow runs through a visual builder, and the Claude connection is a single API call you paste in from the guide. If you can follow a checklist, you can have it running in about 30 minutes.

Is it against Instagram’s rules to automate DM replies?

No, as long as you use approved tools that connect through the official messaging integration. Instagram’s help center covers the current messaging policies, and the guide walks through a compliant setup.

Why does responding fast matter so much?

Because interest decays by the minute. Harvard Business Review has covered lead response research for years, and the pattern holds: whoever replies first usually gets the conversation. Automating the first reply keeps you first without watching your inbox all day.
